Certificate of Conformity issued with every installation

A Certificate of Conformity (COC) is necessary for all permanent Gas installations in buildings. This includes gas equipment such as built-in Gas Stoves/Ovens, Gas “Geysers” (Water heaters), Gas fireplaces, and Gas braais.

Having a COC proves that your gas installation is safe and complies with the rules and regulations outlined in the South African National Standards (SANS) and local Municipal By-laws.

Movable gas heaters and Gas braais on wheels are considered temporary and do not require a COC.

Here’s who will require you to have a valid Certificate of Conformity (COC):

  1. Your insurance company: If your property suffers damage due to a gas fault, your insurance company will expect you to produce a valid certificate. Not being able to produce one may invalidate your claim.
  2. Your bank: When you sell your property, the bank will require a valid COC for the mortgage registration and change of ownership of a property housing an existing gas installation.
  3. Transfer attorneys: Similar to the bank, the transfer attorneys will require a valid COC for the mortgage registration and change of ownership of a property housing an existing gas installation.
  4. Homeowners Association (HOA)
  5. The new owner or person staying at the property permanently

When will you require a new Certificate of Conformity (COC):

  1. On completion of a new gas installation or Gas Appliance connection
  2. After any modification, alteration, or maintenance of an existing gas installation
